Where water goes once it hits a kitchen floor
A kitchen packs more hiding places into one room than any other. Water runs into cabinet bases, under toe-kicks, beneath the dishwasher and behind the sink base. Flooring often continues under the cabinets, so the wet area is bigger than the puddle.
From there it soaks the subfloor, wicks up the back of the drywall, and sometimes drips into the ceiling below or the wall behind. Census data list 25,898 Little Elm residents in 2010 and 46,453 a decade later, and many recent builds use engineered cabinet boxes. Ask what yours are made of, because the material decides how they react to water.
The cabinet door sticks and the floor feels spongy
Doors that no longer close, a baseboard that has lifted, a toe-kick that has gone soft, or a floor that flexes near the sink are signs that water has been sitting. Warm, humid air in the cabinet base also smells musty after a few days. The trade term for stopping that spread is water damage repair, and we explain the rebuild side on our water damage repair page.

Kitchen safety: water, power and appliances
A kitchen has outlets at counter height, a dishwasher and range wired into the wall, and often a refrigerator on a floor that is now wet. Turn off the breaker for the kitchen only if the panel is in a dry place you can reach without stepping in water. If water is near an outlet or the panel, stay out and call the power company or 911 first.
Shut off the water to the sink or the main valve if a supply line is the source. A gas range with a gas smell means everyone leaves and calls the gas company. Do not wade through water that came from a backed-up drain.
How we dry a kitchen without tearing out the whole room
We start with extraction, using wet vacuums and extraction units on the floor and in low areas. Then moisture meters and a thermal imaging camera map the cabinets, the walls and the floor under them. Thermal images show cool wet areas behind surfaces that look dry.
To dry a cabinet cavity, the toe-kicks and sometimes the cabinet bases come off so air can reach the wet space. Low-profile air movers fit around cabinets, and LGR dehumidifiers pull moisture out of the air. Readings are repeated until the meter says the materials are dry, and our water damage cleanup page covers the cleaning stage that comes with it.
Ask any company whether its crews work to the ANSI/IICRC S500 water categories. A dishwasher discharge is Category 2 gray water, while a fresh sink supply line is Category 1 when it is caught early. The category decides how much has to be removed.
Keep or replace: a materials guide for kitchens
| Material | How it reacts to water | Usual guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Solid wood cabinets | Hold up better, can often be dried | Often kept if dried quickly and readings drop |
| Particleboard or MDF cabinet boxes | Swell, crumble and do not return to shape | Usually replaced when the base was soaked |
| Laminate surfaces | Edges lift and swell | Replace if the substrate has swollen |
| Countertops (stone, solid surface) | Water rarely harms the top | Usually kept, but may need removal to dry cabinets |
| Tile and backsplash | Tile holds, grout and backer can stay wet | Check the backer and the wall behind |
| Hardwood, vinyl plank, laminate flooring | Cup, buckle, trap water below | Often pulled to dry the subfloor |
| Insulation and drywall at the wicking line | Wick upward and hold moisture | Cut above the water line if the meter reads high |
Rebuilding cabinets and countertops after drying is a remodel trade, and a kitchen or cabinet contractor does it. We stop the damage and tell you what is likely to need replacing.
When the appliance caused it
If a dishwasher hose, an ice maker line or a refrigerator supply failed, the cause has its own page. Read our appliance leak water damage page for how those failures happen and how to prevent the next one. The kitchen drying steps here still apply.
What drives the cost of a kitchen water loss
| Factor | What it adds or removes |
|---|---|
| Water category | Gray water from a dishwasher means more removal than a clean supply leak |
| Cabinet material | Particleboard often fails, solid wood often dries |
| Flooring type and layers | Floors that run under cabinets are harder to dry |
| Drying days | Wet cavities need more equipment time |
| Rebuild scope | Cabinets, counters and flooring afterward are a separate job |
Texas Department of Insurance guidance says sudden and accidental water damage is often covered while gradual seepage often is not, so go through your policy with your insurer. Keep damaged items and receipts for the adjuster. A real price comes after assessment.

Kitchen mistakes that cost more later
- Wiping the floor and ignoring the cabinet base.
- Leaving the toe-kicks on, which traps wet air inside.
- Caulking or sealing a damp cabinet.
- Installing new flooring before the subfloor is dry.
- Tossing the damaged cabinet before photographing it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you come out tonight or on a weekend for a kitchen leak?
Our dispatch line is open 24/7, and a crew can often be sent the same day. Shut off the water at the sink or the main valve while you wait, and keep your hands off wet outlets.
Do the cabinets have to come out?
Not always. Often only the toe-kicks and the base come off so the cavity can dry, and solid wood boxes may be saved. Particleboard that has swollen usually has to go.
Is the water under my dishwasher dangerous?
Dishwasher discharge is Category 2 gray water, so avoid contact, wear gloves, and do not wipe it up with towels you will reuse. We clean and dry affected materials.
Will my kitchen floor be ruined?
It depends on the flooring and how long it stayed wet. Tile usually survives, while laminate and some vinyl plank warp. The moisture meter on the subfloor decides.
Do you replace the cabinets and countertops?
No. We dry and document. A cabinet or remodeling contractor handles new cabinets, counters and finish work.
Will my insurance cover it?
Texas Department of Insurance says sudden and accidental water is often covered, and gradual seepage often is not. Ask your insurer and check your policy before you assume either way.
