Carpet, pad and tack strip are three different problems

Carpet is only the top layer. Underneath is a foam or fiber pad that soaks up water like a sponge, and along the walls sits tack strip, the wooden strip that holds the carpet taut. Each dries at a different pace, and the pad is usually the slowest.

Census counts put Little Elm at 25,898 residents in 2010 and 46,453 in 2020, and a lot of recent carpet is in bedrooms and living areas over a slab. Water that soaks through gets trapped between the pad and the slab surface, where it can sit for days. A dry-looking carpet can hide a wet pad, so ask for a meter reading before you decide.

The carpet is soaking and squishes underfoot

Squishing, a dark patch that keeps spreading, a damp smell or a rolled edge near the wall all tell you water is under the surface. What you need is called water damage cleanup, which takes out the water, cleans what can be saved and dries the rest. Our water damage cleanup page walks through that stage.

Safety around wet carpet

Water in carpet hides cords, outlets and floor-level power strips. Do not plug in or unplug anything standing in water, and cut power to the room at the panel only when you can stand dry at the panel and you can reach it safely. Call the power company or 911 first about shock risk, sparks or a gas smell.

If the water came from a toilet, a drain or outside, keep children and pets off the carpet and wear gloves and boots. Wet carpet is also slippery, particularly in hallways. Move furniture legs off the damp area and lift anything that can stain the fibers.

Dry in place or remove: how the decision is made

Clean water caught early can often be dried in place. We extract the standing water, lift the carpet edge from the tack strip, and either pull the pad or replace it. Air movers and a dehumidifier then dry the carpet, the floor and the air.

Contaminated water is different. ANSI/IICRC S500 describes Category 2 gray water and Category 3 black water, such as sewage or flood water. For those, carpet and pad are removed, because porous fibers cannot be made safe again.

Sooner is better, and we do not promise a number of hours. The moisture meter decides what can stay.

Delamination, stains, odor and shrinkage

Delamination happens when the backing separates from the carpet. If you can peel the layers apart, the carpet is generally finished. Stains from tannins, soil or dyes can bleed up from the pad, and odor tells you bacteria or mold have started.

Carpet that dries without being stretched may shrink or ripple. Re-stretching is possible when the carpet is otherwise sound, and a flooring installer does it. We dry carpet and do not sell or install new carpet.

Wet subfloor and the mold watch

Texas Department of Insurance says mold can start within a day after a leak, and advises moving wet items and starting to dry right away. Under carpet, the pad and the slab surface hold moisture longer than the top does. We check both with a moisture meter and a thermal imaging camera, and our structural drying page explains how a whole room is brought down to a dry reading.

NWS Dallas/Fort Worth climate normals show 4.37 inches in October plus 4.78 inches in May as the wettest months. Humid weeks slow drying, so a room that took two days in dry air can take longer in a wet month. Run the air conditioner and ask us whether more dehumidifiers are needed.

What decides the cost of a carpet water loss

FactorReason it matters here
Water categoryContaminated water means removal, clean water may allow drying in place
Rooms and square footageMore carpet means more extraction and more equipment
Pad and subfloor conditionA soaked pad or a wet slab adds time
Drying days and humidityWet weather slows drying
Replacement flooringNew carpet and installation are a separate scope

Sudden and accidental water damage is often covered by home policies and gradual leaks often are not, so ask your insurer and check your policy. Photograph the carpet before it is moved.

Mistakes that ruin carpet that could have been saved

  • Waiting to see if it dries on its own.
  • Setting a fan on top and leaving the pad wet underneath.
  • Walking on a wet carpet and spreading contaminants.
  • Steam cleaning over a wet pad.
  • Putting furniture back before the floor reads dry.

Homes in The Colony and Aubrey see these same errors. For the bigger drying picture, see water mitigation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone look at my wet carpet tonight or this weekend?

Dispatch is 24/7, and same-day visits are possible depending on the schedule. While you wait, stop the source, lift furniture off the carpet, and keep people off the wet area.

Can wet carpet be saved?

Often yes when the water was clean and the carpet was dried quickly. Contaminated water means removal. A meter reading on the pad and the floor settles the question.

Do you replace the pad or the whole carpet?

We remove wet pad and carpet when needed. We do not sell or install new carpet, so a flooring installer handles the replacement.

My carpet smells musty but looks fine. Why?

The pad or the slab surface may still be wet. Odor means microbes are active, so have it metered. If growth is found, mold remediation follows ANSI/IICRC standards for mold.

Why is my carpet coming apart in layers?

That is delamination. The backing glue has failed after soaking, and the carpet usually cannot be repaired.

Does this page cover hardwood?

No. Hardwood floors react differently and have their own handling. This page is about carpet, pad and tack strip.
